Canadian Friends of Finland

welcomes you to
Jean Sibelius and Finland’s Awakening
Lecture by Glenda Goss,  Sibelius Academy, Helsinki

Glenda Goss is professor of music history at the Sibelius Academy and the author of, Sibelius: A Composer's Life and the Awakening of Finland.
At the end of the nineteenth century Finland experienced a Golden Age of music and art unprecedented in the country’s history. Among the crowning achievements were the compositions of Jean Sibelius. What prompted this artistic awakening? What other high points characterized the Finnish Golden Age and what was the effect on the wider world of the arts and letters in Europe, and even beyond? The answers to these questions are bound up with pressing social and political issues at the time Sibelius was coming of age as a composer, a time when Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire. As the Finns “awakened” politically, their artistic life flourished in reciprocal fashion.
The Runeberg Chorus
with Kaoru Henry, soprano, will perform selections by Sibelius.
